I think we’ve all said it before…”there’s no more great music!?” For many years that was a very true statement because the music business was controlled and dominated by big labels. These labels dictated what music we heard and enjoyed but these labels almost always played it safe. They waited for a breakthrough artist to emerge and when one did, they manufactured copycat artists and flooded the world with music that was a close variation of “a sure thing”- music that was already being consumed and listened to.

Music is Different Now

For the past ten years or so the music has changed for the better. Technology such as digital recording tools, social media, streaming services and so on has made music creation, distribution and marketing affordable and within reach.

For Consumers, we now have access to thousands of songs and thousands of artists. We can control and curate what we listen to.

For Artists, they have the ability to record their music, release and market it without the influence and money of a label. More importantly, artists have the ability to make music AND own the rights to it.

BUT the music business is still very much the same

The music business is still a business. While many labels have struggled to evolve with the changing landscape, one thing is clear…artists still need resources to be able to take undeniable talent and turn it into a business. Labels provided the expertise and financial backing to develop an artist and as profitability of their old model has shifted and waned, so has their ability to develop new artists.
